25 August 2008 Perth, Australia A 35-year-old international student at Curtin University who has cerebral palsy was robbed and beaten this week. She was attacked and robbed by a group of 3 men on her way from University to student housing. She was beaten until she was unconscious and sustained chipped teeth and serious bruising asa result of the attack. Fortunately, a passing St. John’s Ambulance crew witnessed the assault and stopped to help. The attackers fled when the ambulance crew arrived, which may have saved the student from additional harm. Two days later, the police announced that two suspects (aged 21 and 25) had been arrested and that they were looking for a third suspect in the case.
There have been a number of similar attacks on people in and around the Curtin University area, and University officials indicated that they will work with police to improve student safety. for more information on this case, see:

As a Curtin University student for over 2 years I can say that the security in place is completely sub-standard. There is a real fear amongst students when travelling within the campus, especially at night.
Admittedly, there has been a visable increase in the security arrangments of late. However I feel this increase in security is temporary in nature, as a reaction to the bedlam experienced on campus recently.
Given the demographics of the surrounding areas, Curtin should be doing much more to ensure that students and staff not only feel safe but are safe.
How severely or how many students need to be subjected to these crimes before Curtin takes the security situation seriously.
