Korean Outrage

By dsobsey

24 November 2008 - Cheongju, Korea A Korean court found the grandfather and three uncles of a sixteen-year-old girl with an intellectual disability guilty of repeatedly raping the girl over the last seven years. This suggests that the rapes started when she was only nine. According a story in the Korea Times, one of those convicted has a previous conviction for rape.  Incredibly, the court sentenced all four to suspended sentences ranging from three to four years. The Korea Times quotes the court as suggesting that the light sentences were given so that the perpetrators could continue caring for the victim:

The accused have fostered the girl in her parents’ place. Considering her disability, she will also need their care and help in living in the future.

I can’t add a lot to what has already been said, except this is so typical of how people with disabilities are viewed and valued in various/most societies. The idea that these men were ‘taking care’ of her in the first place is inappropriate, but to insist they continue rather than go to jail where they belong is truly an act of injustice.
