3 December 2008 – Thousands of Koreans have joined to protest a judges decision to release four family members who repeatedly raped over a period of years a sixteen-year-old girl who has developmental disabilities. The judge suggested that he would not imprison the grandfather and uncles of the victims so they would be free to take care of the victim, as previously reported on icad. Now an internet based petition has gather more than 16,000 electronic signatures protesting the courts decision and hopes to collect 30,000 signatures by December 19th.
According to the JoongAng Daily, protesters are calling for the impeachment of Judge Oh Jun-keun, and prosecutors are appealing the sentence. The following quote is included from that report:
“This is just unacceptable,” said Lee Eun-sang, deputy director of the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center. “Heavier punishments are handed down when a sex crime victim is a family member or a child or a disabled person. And in this case the victim fits all three categories. Yet the judge still spared the offenders from jail.”

There are no words to express the outrage, shock, and profound sense of sadness I feel for the young woman who has been repeatedly raped and treated like communal sex toy. I grieve for her, and all she has lost, including the justice she deserves. I grieve, too, because of the perversion of justice that sickeningly matches the perversion of the people who were entrusted with the care of this precious life.
I can only hope that the Korean women’s community will continue to give her shelter and protection, and the support to survive and ultimately have a life of safety, dignity and choice.

I am horrified by the story of the rape of this young Korean girl. If the Justice system doesn’t stand up for her who will? Certainly not her family who kept her as a sex slave. Surely the judge in this case must be an abuser also. Who else would hand down such a ridiculous sentence? I urge the people of her country to react appropriately and boot that judge out of office. Surely the world will judge a country harshly who allows that kind of treatment to one of the least of its’ citizens.
