20 March 2009 – Korea icad received a note from Dr. Yu-Ri Kim in Korea last night regarding the previously reported case of young girl with developmental disabilities who was repeatedly raped by male relatives. The case brought about widespread public outrage when all four perpetrators were given suspended sentences. See Korean Outrage and Thousands Protest Rapists Probation!
Dr. Kim reports that the girl is now living in a shelter for abused children and that her uncles are being sentenced to several years in prison.
As of this date 17,066 Koreans had signed the petition asking that the original court ruling in this case was reviewed. In icad’s own poll asking if suspended sentences could be appropriate in this kind of case, 531 (99.07%) people who responded felt that this kind of crime required imprisonment and 5 (00.93%) people who responded felt that suspended sentences were probably okay.
