16 May 2012 BBC Middle East News BBC Arabic’s reporter Ghada Nassef reports on abuse allegations in eight of Jordan’s 54 privately run care homes for children with developmental disabilities. The original documentary was aired in Arabic. A short English language video can be found here.
Perhaps the most telling and saddest part of this video is a senior attendant instructing a new staff member in how to brutalize the vulnerable children they care for. According to the BBC:
After the broadcast, Jordan’s Minister of Social Development, Wajih Azaizeh, told the BBC that “an investigation will be conducted and the results will be open and clear.”
The film shows pictures of children being beaten daily, humiliated, deprived of food and denied access to education.
A short, English-language excerpt of the hidden camera video can be found on the website of The Guardian.

The fact that such torture is taught to carers leaves the children completely helpless. The exposure of this practice is essential and should be widely publicized, to effect quick change in the system.
